Tallahassee Veterans Legal Collaborative (TVLC)
TVLC is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with our primary mission being “providing veterans with access to legal services that protect their interests and promote justice.” We were formed over three years ago to provide cost-effective, or pro bono, legal consultations to veterans, regardless of income. From our Homeless and at-risk to homelessness three day Stand Downs, we saw a need to help veterans year-round. During our Stand Downs, we collaborated with over 60 agencies/service providers with the most rewarding outcome being the on-site court/legal assistance.
Now, our weekly Legal Clinic at the American Legion provides primary services with driver’s license reinstatement and legal advice with evictions, child support, divorce, and many other issues, including referral to Attorney’s in Tallahassee or elsewhere.
Our initial partnership with FSU School of Law helped more than 1000 veterans. We work very closely with Veterans Affairs, Career Source, 211 and coordinate with the State Attorney’s office, the Public Defender’s office, Florida Veterans Foundation, the FSU Student Veterans Center, Para Source Legal Services, Legal Services of North Florida, Legal Aid Foundation of Tallahassee.
Each spring, we host a Veterans Stand Down at the North Florida Fairgrounds. This event allows Veterans to receive VA and housing assistance, dental work, medical checkups, at least 5 hot meals, food bank goods, veterinarian care for their pets, free haircuts, and many other services.
Our largest budget shortfall is providing veterans financial help with driver’s license replacement due to the fines, fees and courses required both in and out of states.
